Federal Statues give local governments the ability to substantially influence federal decisions and specifically interact with federal agencies beyond those that are available to the general public. These include completion of a “consistency review” with a local land use or natural resource plan; recognition of a State or local government as a cooperating agency; and coordination between the federal agencies and the State and local governments. Understanding and using these processes further the statutory mandates of State and local governments to protect the health, safety and welfare of their constituents.
